Toastmaster Of Speech Contest Suggested Outline

1. Meet with contestants prior to time for contest to begin to brief them on rules. See rules for exact briefing information. Important: remind contestants material must be substantially their own creation and that credit must be given sources for quotes.

2. Verify presence of contestants against printed program. Verify name pronunciation. If there are substitute speakers, note name, speech title, etc. and inform Contest Chairman.

3. Give contestants:

- Contest rules
- Certificate of Eligibility to complete if not already completed
- Verify Eligibility (must be current, dues-paid member of club)
- Biographical sheets if not completed

4. Verify Speech Titles

5. Ensure you have completed Certificates of Participation to hand out at interview time to contestants.

6. Draw for speaking positions. (have draws ready in advance)

7. Review timing rules. Acquaint speakers with speaking area, microphone, lights, etc. See rules.

8. KEEP CONTESTENT ON TIME!

9. Acknowledge introduction and make short appropriate remarks.

10. Inform audience that rules have been reviewed with contestants.

11. Ask Chief Judge if judges are ready.

12. Have timers explain timing. (See suggestions below.)

13. Remind audience NOT to take photographs during speeches. Ask that cellular phones and paging devices be turned off or set to "silent" mode.

14. Lead applause as contestant approaches lectern. Announce only contestant's name and speech title, speech title and contestant's name (in order) slowly and clearly. Shake hands and leave lectern area.

15. Call for one minute of silence for judges to complete ballots after each speaker. Ask timer to signal you. No comments on any subject or person.

16. Repeat until all contestants have spoken. Announce when last contestant has spoken.

17. After one-minute silence following last contestant, ask judges to complete ballots and hold up for pick-up.

18. Interview each constant while Chief Judge/counters tally results.

- Introduce contestant, giving club name (area & division also if appropriate)
- Use bio information to draw interesting questions.
- Use equal time for each contestant. Can ask timer to assist.
- Present certificate of participation. (if applicable)
- Shake hands and lead applause.


19. After interviews are complete, return control to Contest Chairman.
